Visual management reinforces lean approach in New Zealand


The New Zealand division has taken the next step in implementing a culture of lean practices across the business.

Following a recent visit by global lean innovation manager Janne Lundberg, ASSA ABLOY New Zealand has adopted a company-wide, innovative approach to visual management, channeling significant efforts to streamline production processes and increase speed-to-market.

It is in operations that the biggest impact has been made. A number of lean production approaches have been adopted for some time, such as pulse meetings and pulse rooms. In the factory’s keying area, the removal of excess inventory to create more ergo-dynamic workstations accounts for a more consistent manufacturing process.

Both the product development and operations teams now use visual planning boards for various purposes. Simon Ellis, president of ASSA ABLOY New Zealand, says: “Visual management effectively facilitates critical decision making for major innovation projects, and helps us to more clearly identify and discuss key issues across the business.”

This year, the team will be making a significant investment in a new powder coating line, providing a great way for the company to reach its full potential in terms of lean manufacturing. They are expecting to see significant improvements in terms of labor utilization, product quality and cost efficiency.
